TRS-80 Model 1

The Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 1 was the first personal computer available commercially to the mass market. It included the keyboard/CPU, a monitor, and a base that provided ports to connect everything together. At a minimum the user could connect it to a tape recorder to store programs and data, either their own or the recommended Radio Shack model. In order for it to be practical, however, it was necessary to purchase the external disk drives. Not only were these expensive, but it made the disk operating system much more complex.

The truth was there wasn't much use for this machine outside of the geek realm, but it was enough to get the ball rolling.
